Creating Echoes: Sound piece development

I was inspired by the natural sounds of the Isle of Sheppey to create a sound piece. , v”.  I like this quote from Robert Worby, the broadcaster, “Listening is an Art.”

I walked around the beaches, arcades, shops and streets of the Island, and realised that it is never a silent place, even in the most remote areas.   I developed the idea of a day in the life of the area, and drew up what I guess would be called a soundboard of the story.   I wanted to explore the contradictions between the natural and human sounds, how those natural sounds have to compete hard and to give a sense of travelling through the sounds.

I went through a whole series of struggles with equipment.  My first recorder broke down, and I bought a replacement.  It took a long time to get this to perform in the way that I wanted.  For a while, all my recordings were coming out with hissing, until I worked out a good combination of file format, recording level, noise reduction, and combination of mike systems.  I could not get Premiere Pro to behave as I wanted, so switched to GarageBand on my husband’s Mac computer.   It was at that point that his machine decided to give up the ghost, and I began to feel that this project was really cursed.   Suffice to say, he got a replacement and I finally achieved the recordings that I wanted.  Such are the joys of technology!
